WHAT IS PILATES?

Over 90 years ago, Joseph Pilates developed this unique exercise system in Germany.
Plagued by asthma as a child, Pilates' method sprang from shear determination to
strengthen his own frail and sickly body. He called his method "The Art Of Contrology",
or muscle control. While interning during WW1, he taught his method to fellow interns.
Pilates also served as an orderly in a hospital on the Isle Of Man, where he began
working with bedridden patients. They were noted to be improving much faster.

Pilates opened his first studio in New York City after immigrating to the USA in 1926.
He has been the secret of dancers and performers since the late 1920s.

Recently Pilates has been discovered by athletes, models, and others
who say they owe their strong, lithe bodies to the Pilates method.

The Pilates method of body conditioning is unique in that it combines
stretching and strengthening exercises, while toning muscles, improving
posture, providing flexibility and balance, and uniting the mind with the
body to create and more streamlined shape.

Pilates treats the body as a whole while incorporating each exercise.
We wish to balance our bodies, improve circulation, reduce stress, and feel great.

We at LifeStyle Pilates will rule on certain principles which
will bring the elements of Pilates together:

1. Concentration
2. Control
3. Core
4. Fluidity
5. Precision
6. Breathing
7. Intuition / Integration
